On October 3, 2008 at approximately 01:00 a.m., the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a 1989 Ford F-150 pickup being driven by Paul W. Mathews near the area of Anderson Street and N. Boulevard. Mathews was displaying a driving pattern consistent with DUI and as the deputy activated his overhead emergency lights, Mathews failed to stop. A short time later Mathews entered onto U.S. 20 near Holmes and the Idaho State Police took primary position and attempted to stop Mathews.
Mathews exited U.S. 20 at St. Leon and drove down Telford Road. Mathews stopped in the road and a female passenger exited his vehicle and he drove off. The female was immediately secured and visual of Matthew’s vehicle was lost. A short time later, ISP located the Ford F-150 driving south on Hitt Road near Lincoln Road and again Mathews failed to stop.
A low speed pursuit ensued and as Mathews approached the area of EITC on Hitt Road, the trooper used the front of his patrol car to push Mathew’s vehicle sideways. After his vehicle spun sideways, Mathews still attempted to flee and eventually drove down Sunnyside Road towards Ammon Road. At this point the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office was behind ISP and as Mathews approached 65th South, the trooper again used the front of his patrol car to push Mathew’s vehicle sideways. As his vehicle came to rest on the side of the road, Mathews was taken into custody.
Mathews was taken to the Bonneville County Jail and incarcerated for felony eluding, DUI, driving without privileges, driving with an open container of alcohol, and littering.
