On Sunday September 28, 2008 at approximately 2315 hours the Vermont State Police in Shaftsbury was contacted about an overdue hiker. The hiker, Robert Singley age 27, a Bennington College student was reported to have been hiking off of Harbour Road in Woodford. He was due back to his residence at 1700 hours. When he failed to return by 2300 hours, his fiance reported him missing.
Troopers from the Shaftsbury Barracks located Singley’s vehicle at a trail entrance located off Harbour Road. Troopers walked a short distance up the trail calling for the subject but due to darkness and fog, turned back.
It was determined during the morning of Monday September 29, 2008 that Singley had not returned home. State Police organized a search plan and once again responded to the area of Singley’s vehicle. Sgt. Brian Turner, Trooper Bob Zink along with Trooper Scott Dunlap and his K9 “Wilson” responded to the area.
At approximately 1130 hours the police dog began picking up a human scent and within minutes located Singley walking on the trail. Singley reported getting lost and disoriented in heavy fog atop the ridge line of Glastenbury Mountain. He advised that he was not prepared to spend the night outdoors, but made due by gaining shelter under a low lying tree. In the morning, when the fog cleared, Singley was able to find his way back onto a trail and was hiking down the mountain when he was spotted by State Troopers.
Except for being wet, cold and hungry, Singley was in good condition and did not require any medical treatment. Singley describes himself as an experienced hiker but was not in possession of a compass, GPS or a map.
The State Police urge anyone who is out hiking to prepare themselves for the worst. If possible bring extra clothing, a flashlight, maps and a cell phone. During the foliage months the woods can appear drastically different and can cause even the most experienced of hikers to become disoriented
