Man Stash of Meth in Wife’s Purse Causes a K9 Alert

On August 23, 2008, at approximately 11:30 A.M., a Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office K9 deputy stopped a blue 4-door Ford sedan for weaving on the I40 near Seligman. During a conversation with the deputy about drug interdiction efforts along the I40, the driver, 27-yearold Seligman resident Jerry Vives, consented to a search of his vehicle for drugs. Vives and his wife, who was a passenger, exited the sedan and K9 “Elliot” began an exterior sniff around the vehicle. “Elliot” alerted on the driver’s side rear door as evidenced by a sudden head turn, increased sniffing and paw scratching.
Vives told the deputy that he and his wife has just returned from Las Vegas and the dog likely alerted to scent of drugs originating from his shoes. Realizing the vehicle would be searched regardless of his reasoning for the alert by K9 “Elliot,” Vives admitted he had stashed some methamphetamine in his wife’s make-up bag without her knowledge. The deputy located the make-up bag and found a plastic baggie inside which contained a useable quantity of methamphetamine. Vives’ wife was unaware he had hidden methamphetamine in her purse, but suspected he had been using methamphetamine.
Vives was arrested for Possession of Dangerous Drugs and booked at the Prescott Detention Center.
