DPS seeking help from those who may have witnessed the collision Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) Officers are investigating a rollover collision which resulted in the death of 48-year-old Gerald Lee Surplus of Sun City, AZ. The collision occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 27, 2008 on US 60 in the area of milepost 128. Detectives from the DPS Vehicular Crimes Unit (VCU) responded and are currently investigating this collision.
Maricopa County Sheriff’s Deputies located the rollover at about 3:36 a.m. and notified DPS. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was fatally injured and pronounced deceased at the scene.
Surplus was traveling westbound on US 60 when the pick-up he was driving, a late model silver Dodge Mega-cab 4×4 pick-up, veered off of the left side of the roadway into the median, eventually losing control and rolling numerous times through the center median ending up on the eastbound lanes. The US 60 was closed for nearly 9 hours, which caused traffic delays and backups in the area.
DPS is hoping to speak with anyone who may have witnessed this collision or observed this vehicle in the Whittman area around the time of 3:00 to 3:30 a.m. Witnesses should call DPS at (602) 223-2212.
