During the week of August 19, 2008, through August 25, 2008, Big Island police arrested 16 motorists for drunk driving. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash. One was under the age of 21.
So far this year, there have been 902 DUI arrests compared with 837 during the same period last year, an increase of 8 percent. The numbers of arrests by district were:

There have been 1,173 major accidents so far this year compared with 1,373 during the same period last year, a decrease of 15 percent.
So far this year, there have been 16 traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with 23 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30 percent.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide.
