DUI Checkpoints & Crime on the Road, Sobriety Checkpoints

Two women died and three others were injured late Sunday afternoon in a two vehicle head-on crash on Highway 58 about three miles west of the Crescent Lake junction.
 
On August 24, 2008 at approximately 5:15 p.m. a 2006 Honda Ridgeline pickup driven by NORMA LEE KAUS, age 70, from La Pine, was eastbound on Highway 58 rounding a right curve near milepost 66 when it continued across the center line into the westbound lane. DOUGLAS BRUCE CAMPBELL, age 48, from Eugene, was driving a westbound 2001 Ford F150 pickup and steered left to try to avoid the oncoming Honda pickup but was struck head-on.
 
KAUS was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was using safety restraints and her vehicle’s airbags deployed.
 
DOUGLAS CAMPBELL received minor injuries.
 
His wife, KELLY T. CAMPBELL, age 45, was seated in the right front seat and was killed in the crash.
 
The couple’s children, a 13-year old son and 6-year old daughter, received minor injuries.
 
All members of the CAMPBELL family were either using safety restraints or were in a child safety seat. Their vehicle’s airbags deployed. The three surviving family members were reportedly transported to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend.
 
Oregon State Police troopers from the Gilchrist and Springfield offices are continuing the investigation. Cascade Lakes Fire Department, EMS personnel from Crescent and Oakridge, and ODOT assisted at the scene.
 
Highway 58 at the scene of the crash was closed until about 9:45 p.m.
