From July 2-23, 2008, the Massachusetts State Police participated in the “Drunk Driving: Over the Limit. Under Arrest” mobilization funded by the Executive Office of Public Safety & Security. This mobilization featured media and enforcement components which contributed to its success. There were numerous media spots that featured State Police personnel warning motorists of the dangers of drinking and driving. Also during this campaign, the Massachusetts State Police conducted seven sobriety checkpoints in cooperation with local police agencies. The checkpoints were located in Downtown Boston, Dorchester, Lawrence, Lowell, West Boylston, Hingham and Springfield. The Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile was deployed at all of the aforementioned checkpoints. The state police concluded this recent campaign with the following results:
• Number of Officers/Patrols 286 • Civil Speeding 650
• OUI Arrests 106 • Speed Warnings 250
• OUI Arrests Local 9 • Seatbelt Violations 238
• Suspension/Revocation Arrests 26 • Child Restraint Violations 15
• Other Felony Arrests 6 • Other Violations 373
• Other Misdemeanor Arrests 16 • Other Warnings 393
• Criminal Summonses 56 • Total Number of Citations Issued 1707
Thanks in large part to funding provided by the Highway Safety Division of the Executive Office of Public Safety & Security, the number of arrests for Operating Under the Influence of alcohol/drugs increased dramatically compared to past mobilizations.
