The worst month ever on Maine roads was 17 years ago this month. In July of 1991, 42 people died in motor vehicle crashes with state troopers covering most of those crash investigations. There were 41 people killed in August of 1963 and 40 people died on Maine roads in August of 1979. Newspapers stories last weekend in Maine incorrectly said the most deaths ever recorded were 30. July and August are usually the most deadly months on Maine roads because of the influx of vacationers and the higher probability of alcohol being involved in a crash. The highway death toll so far this month is 17. Last July, 20 people died on Maine roads.
State Police now say a Sabattus man who died while driving a truck on the Maine Turnpike last week was not the result of the truck crashing into guardrails. The State Medical Examiner’s Office says the cause of death of the 36 year old Randy Sebring will now await the results of additional testing. Three people died on Maine roads last weekend. A Plymouth man was killed Sunday afternoon on Interstate 95 in Orono when his pickup hydroplaned in rain; he was thrown out the back window and the truck landed on top of him. A 31 year old man died Saturday morning in a one car crash on Route 99 in Kennebunk and a motorcyclist was killed Sunday afternoon in Waterboro when a tree fell on him.
The second New York man wanted in connection with an Old Orchard Beach homicide last month has been returned to Maine. Three State Police detectives and a trooper escorted Jeffrey Williams from New York City to the York County Jail last Thursday. Williams made his first appearance in a Maine court on Monday. Williams and Rennie Cassimy are charged with murder in connection with the death of Winston George inside his home on June 20.
