Waukegan, Illinois— A 13 year-old boy drown today in Lake Michigan after he and his friends went swimming near a northern pier of Waukegan harbor.

Johnny Garcia, of Waukegan, was swimming with two of his buddies when the three of them went to retrieve a ball that had drifted away from shore. The boys attempted to swim back to shore when they were swept into deeper water by strong current and heavy waves.

Two 16 year-old boys were able to make it back to shore but Johnny did not. It was estimated that Johnny went under approximately 15 feet from the pier and 480 feet from the shoreline. He was located by Waukegan Rescue approximately 45 minutes later. Johnny was transported to Vista East Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

“We are deeply saddened for the Garcia family,” said Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran. “I cannot stress enough how important it is for parents to talk to their children about the dangers of swimming in Lake Michigan without proper supervision and safety gear.”
