(COLUMBUS) – Whether you are going for the music, the crowd or just people watching, if you are not 21 and attending Jamboree in the Hills this week, don’t drink. The Ohio Investigative Unit, a division of the Ohio Department of Public Safety (ODPS), will have undercover agents combing the Jamboree in the Hills grounds looking for underage drinkers and other liquor law violations.
“The Department of Public Safety wants to have the safest summer on record,” said ODPS Director Henry Guzmán. “Our divisions will be working together as well as with local partners to promote educational outreach as well as have a strong law enforcement presence on our highways and in our permit establishments that sell liquor and tobacco around the state.”
Last year, agents arrested 100 individuals for underage drinking during the weekend festivities at Jamboree in the Hills. Agents also made arrests for disorderly conduct, drug charges and falsification.
“We want everyone to enjoy the entertainment, just enjoy it safely,” said Ohio Investigative Unit Executive Director Cathy Collins-Taylor.
To get the word out, the agency will be distributing posters to area liquor permit establishments and a public service announcement (PSA) has been developed to remind those underage individuals that it is illegal to consume alcohol and the consequences if they are caught. The PSA is scheduled to air throughout the weekend at the venue and can be downloaded by logging onto www.oiu.ohio.gov.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol will have a visible presence in the area and will be aggressively looking for drunk drivers along the highways.
