ATV Crash In Concordia Parish Claims The Life Of A Juvenile

On Thursday, May 15, 2008, at 5:49 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a fatal crash involving an ATV and an eighteen-wheeler. The crash occurred on US 84, milepost 171, at Levens Addition Road. This location is in Concordia Parish.
The crash involved a Hanma four-wheeler, driven by Mr. Michael Griggs (B/M 14 yrs) of Ferriday, LA and a 1999 Peterbilt (18-wheeler), driven by Mr. Gary D. Haney (W/M 67 yrs) of Cave Springs, AR. The four-wheeler was north bound on Levens Addition Road when Mr. Griggs failed to stop at the stop sign located at this intersection (Levens Addition Road at US 84). The four-wheeler then collided with the right rear portion of the Peterbilt, which was east bound on US 84.
Mr. Griggs was ejected from his four-wheeler and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.
Mr. Haney was not injured in the crash.
Routine toxicology tests are pending.
Concordia Parish Coroner’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.
Troop E Troopers have investigated 15 fatal crashes for the year of 2008, resulting in 15 fatalities. Two of the 15 fatalities have involved pedestrians. One fatal crash involved an ATV. Eight of the 12 fatal crashes (vehicle only) have involved unrestrained motorists/occupants. Seatbelt use is unknown in one fatal crash. Three fatal victims were restrained.
*The public is reminded that it is dangerous and illegal to operate off-road vehicles (i.e. three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and other all-terrain vehicles) on any public roadway in this state.
