The Austin Police Department along with Austin Park Police will honor fallen officers during the Law Enforcement memorial service on Thursday, May 8 at 7 p.m. The service will be at the Law Enforcement Memorial located on the northeast corner of the State Capitol grounds.
The roll call of the 19 fallen officers from the Austin Police Department will be conducted by cadets of the 114th APD cadet class. During roll call, officers of the DWI Unit will represent the department’s fallen officers as these officers are recognized for their dedication and loss of life to protect those they served.
The constant sacrifice and heroism distinguishes the police profession. In addition to the lives of the fallen officers, families make sacrifices so that their loved ones can pursue a career in law enforcement. Family members and law enforcement personnel will attend the memorial in recognition of the sacrifices made by the fallen officers.
In addition to the roll call, the memorial service will include posting and retiring of the colors. Taps will be played followed by Amazing Grace on bagpipes by the APD Pipe and Drum Corps. There will be a 21-gun salute by the APD Honor Guard.
There have been 19 fallen officers in the history of the Austin Police Department and one officer from the Austin Park Police. The first officer of the Austin Police Department lost his life on March 8, 1875. Officer Cornelius Fahey was fatally shot on Congress Avenue. The first female officer died in the line-of-duty on October 31, 2004. Officer Amy Donovan tragically lost her life while attempting to apprehend a fleeing suspect. Ten officers were killed due to traffic collisions; of these ten collisions, two were killed by drunk drivers.
Photographs and brief summaries of each Austin Police Department officer killed in the line of duty are available on the APD Web site at www.cityofaustin.org/police.
