Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Director Marshall Fisher today announced the culmination of a 24-hour multi-agency roundup Wednesday that resulted in 102 drug arrests in 20 counties along with seizures of drugs, weapons, vehicles and cash.
Officers also rescued seven drug-endangered children, which brings the number of drug-endangered children rescued this year to 15, Director Fisher said.
“I congratulate the MBN and partnering agencies for their exemplary work to protect our citizens and create safer communities. The announcement of these arrests clearly shows that state support for our law enforcement agencies is crucial to ensure the safety of our people,” Governor Barbour said. “Since I became Governor in 2004, public safety has been a top priority for my administration, and I’m proud of the steps we’ve taken to give law enforcement more resources to fight drug and other types of crime while putting criminals behind bars.”
MBN agents and participating officers confiscated 25 pounds of marijuana, a pound of cocaine, four weapons, two vehicles, a bullet-resistant vest, and approximately $28,000 in cash.
Among those arrested was a Chinese National with an in-valid commercial driver’s license and deportation notice. In addition, four people arrested face the possibility of enhanced penalties for selling drugs within 1500 feet of a college or park.
Those arrested face felony charges for the sale and possession of controlled substances, including cocaine, crack, methamphetamine, marijuana, and prescription drugs.
Code-named Operation Byrne Blitz 2008, the MBN effort was conducted in conjunction with a multi-state initiative coordinated by the National Alliance of State Drug Enforcement Agencies, of which the MBN is a member. It involved law enforcement officers from 42 state and local agencies, including the MBN, Mississippi Department of Corrections, Mississippi Highway Patrol, Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and Mississippi Department of Transportation.
The counties involved in the operation were Clay, DeSoto, Forrest, George, Hancock, Harrison, Hinds, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, Lamar, Lincoln, Marion, Newton, Pearl River, Pike, Stone, Tunica, Warren, Wayne and Yazoo.
